The drop slot above the door is used for depositing large bills or envelopes of money from the register drawer. This helps control the amount of unsecured bills that could easily be pilfered by unscrupulous employees, or snatched from a distracted cashier by a crafty theif. It's primarily used for burglar resistance and offers no fire resistance.
